Giving a Plain Bathroom a Little Vintage Charm
Bathrooms are often the most overlooked room when it comes to cottagecore styling — all that tile and grout can feel impossible to soften. But a plain, builder-basic bathroom can take on real vintage warmth with a handful of thoughtful, mostly removable touches. You don’t need a renovation, just a good eye for texture and detail.
Start With Soft Textiles
Nothing warms up a cold, tiled bathroom faster than fabric.
Swap in a woven or fringed bath mat. Look for natural fibres like cotton or jute in a soft, faded colour rather than anything bright white or synthetic-feeling. A slightly textured weave instantly reads as older and softer.
Hang a linen or waffle-weave towel. Roll or fold towels rather than hanging them flat, and choose warm neutrals, sage, or a soft striped pattern over anything stark white.
Add a small curtain instead of a plain blind. If your window allows it, a gathered cotton or linen curtain in a delicate sprig or gingham print softens the whole room in one go.
Small Fixtures Make a Big Difference
Change out generic hardware. Towel hooks, a toilet roll holder, and cabinet handles are usually simple to swap and don’t require any real DIY skill. Look for aged brass, ceramic, or glass in place of chrome or plastic — even a temporary, removable option works in a rental.
Bring in a vintage mirror. A single ornate or softly aged mirror leaned or hung above the sink does more for the room’s character than almost anything else. Charity shops and second-hand markets are excellent places to find one cheaply.
Add a glass soap dispenser and jar. Decant hand soap into a simple glass pump bottle, and keep cotton pads or bath salts in a lidded glass jar on the counter. This one swap alone removes most of the plastic clutter that makes bathrooms feel modern and impersonal.
Bring the Outside In
Add a plant that loves humidity. A trailing fern, a small potted ivy, or eucalyptus in a simple vase brings life and a soft, garden-adjacent feeling into the room. Even a small bunch of dried flowers on the windowsill works if natural light is limited.
Use a wicker or wooden storage basket. Swap any plastic storage bins for a woven basket to hold spare towels or toiletries. It’s a small change that adds real warmth and texture.
Lighting and Little Details
- Warm bulbs over cool ones. As with the rest of a cottagecore home, a soft warm-white bulb makes an enormous difference to how the whole room feels.
- A small candle or oil burner on the counter adds a flickering, old-world glow for baths in particular.
- Vintage-style apothecary bottles for cotton buds, bath salts, or spare toiletries tie the counter together and hide anything too modern-looking.
- A small stool or side table beside the bath, holding a book and a candle, instantly makes the space feel like a retreat rather than a functional room.
Pulling It Together
The trick with a plain bathroom is layering softness — fabric, wood, glass, and greenery — against all that hard tile and porcelain. You’re not trying to disguise the room, just warm it up with texture and a few well-chosen, mostly removable details. Start with the towels and hardware, add a plant, and the rest of the cottage feeling tends to follow naturally.
